Trend #1- Snake Plant
The Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata) is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, native to tropical West Africa from Nigeria east to the Congo. It is most commonly known as the snake plant, Saint George's sword, mother-in-law's tongue, and viper's bowstring hemp, among other names.
Snake Plant has been Strongly Rising (64.7%) in the last year. It is experiencing Stability (2.7%) this month as compared to the previous month. With a Search Volume of 301k it is a trend to look up in the future because of its high growth speed.
According to a recent study by retailer Homebase, the UK has planted 322 million more plants in 2020 than in 2019. This is likely due to an increase in time spent in homes in lockdown and a renewed focus on making those spaces more green. Those who have gardens are cultivating it and spending more time ensuring that it’s well looked after and those without (such as in dense cities) are using houseplants as a form of compromise.
Snake Plants are known as a ‘low-maintenance and entry-level plant’, going as far as to be seen as perfect for ‘People Who Can’t Keep Anything Alive’. Trends in home design, increases in remote work and a focus on creating green spaces mean it’s likely this trend till continue apace.
Trend #2 - Canva
Canva is a graphic design platform, used to create social media graphics, presentations, posters, documents and other visual content. The app already includes templates for users to use. The platform is free to use and offers paid subscriptions like Canva Pro and Canva for Enterprise for additional functionality.
Canva has been Strongly Rising (53.8%) in the last year. It is experiencing Stability (2.3%) this month as compared to the previous month. With a Search Volume of 5M, it is a trend to look up in the future because of its high growth speed.
During the summer, Canva raised $60 million in an investment round that values the Australian design start-up at $6 billion, almost double what it was worth when it last raised capital in October. The company is taking on industry giants like Adobe and Microsoft while, at the same time, aiming to make design and publishing more accessible than platforms from larger rivals.
The pandemic also had an impact on Canva’s business, which saw a 75% drop in revenue for their print business. But Chief Operating Officer Cliff Obrecht said that it has “bounced back” to pre-coronavirus levels. This is largely due to the firm investing heavily in collaboration-focused tools, such as a feature that lets users work together on designs in real-time like they would on Google’s Docs. Canva’s also introduced a video-editing function which has also been used by clients to communicate internally with staff about Covid-19
Trend #3 - Discord
Discord is an American VoIP, instant messaging and digital distribution platform designed for creating communities. Users communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers."
Discord has been Strongly Rising (98.1%) in the last year. It is experiencing Stability (3.2%) this month as compared to the previous month. With a Search Volume of 6.12M, it is a trend to look up in the future because of its high growth speed.
Our-socially distanced way of living has given a boost to platforms in the video communications arena. Discord, which is highly popular with gamers and also increasingly all others, raised $100 million more in funding as it hit 140 million monthly active users.
The size of the fundraising is another indication of just how important communications tools continue to be - for users, creators and investors alike. Discord has also developed mobile screen-sharing to handle streaming content with a lot of movement - like for video games and YouTube. Product improvements in a competitive market are key to maintaining an uptick in this trend as users seek out a more fluid platform experience.
